Do Not Go Into Medicine!
by JC Marzan (UST FMS Med Student Council Vice President)
January 20, 2007
The UST Faculty of Medicine and Surgery will soon be releasing the magic list of qualified students that will be given a chance to be admitted in the best medical school in the country. Yes, hundreds of young promising individuals will be entering into a world that they don't have any idea about... hundreds of young intelligent graduates thinking that it's cool to be a medical student!
A friend texted me 2 weeks ago asking me my opinion regarding med school. 2 days ago, another friend texted me, this time asking me how did I come up into a decision of enrolling in Medicine. For Sheena, Majo, and for the rest, read this.
DON'T GO INTO MED SCHOOL! Instead, go and find a work fitted for your pre-med course. To Biology graduates - do researches, go and teach our youth about life, learn more about the taxonomy of every living thing, who knows, you might be the first Filipino Nobel winner? To Med. Tech Graduates - specialize, get a masteral degree, put up a virus lab in the Philippines, teach people about how to prevent diseases, take AMT or ASCP. Who knows? The next secretary of health would be a medical technologist? To Nursing graduates - take the boards, CGFNS and fly abroad, or work here in the Philippines and try to make a difference in healthcare, who knows, you'll be the founder of the best and first Nursing home in the country. To PT/OT graduates - teach the Filipinos exercise properly, put up a fitness center or gym, create an exercise routine or regimen that would make Filipinos grow taller, who knows, with your help, there would be more Filipinos in the NBA. To some other courses I failed to mention, go and make a difference. DON'T GO INTO MED SCHOOL! There are more areas to focus into.
DON'T GO INTO MED SCHOOL! You'll lose your social life! If you are fond of parties, discos, and bars every Friday night, I repeat don't go into med school. Your time for your old friends will be lessened, and you'll be absent in most of the gimmicks and outings of your family. DON'T GO INTO MED SCHOOL! Have more time with your loved ones!
DON'T GO INTO MED SCHOOL! If you cannot handle pressure, this is not for you! If you still want to, you must be ready for different comments from your teachers and peers. You have to be ready for post lecture quizzes, small group discussions, case studies, long exams, laboratory conferences, post lab con quizzes and many more. So If I were you, DON'T GO INTO MED SCHOOL! Don't pressure yourself!
DON'T GO INTO MED SCHOOL! If you are fond of sleeping during class hours and you can’t imagine yourself sleeping only 4 hours per day. DON'T GO INTO MED SCHOOL! Enjoy your bed!
DON'T GO INTO MED SCHOOL! If you hate little details, and specifications, if you don't see yourself dissecting a dead human being, if you don’t want to memorize, if you are contented in knowing the whats and not the hows. DON'T GO INTO MED SCHOOL! Relax your brain cells.
DON'T GO INTO MED SCHOOL! Med school is difficult. It's not what you expect! It’s far different from what you think and imagine. DON'T GO INTO MED SCHOOL!
It’s not cool to become a med student.
But…
If you think you can make a difference and be a better person by becoming a physician… GO INTO MED SCHOOL!
If you think you can manage your time and balance your studies, family, friends, and social life… GO INTO MED SCHOOL!
If you think you can handle pressure… GO INTO MED SCHOOL!
If you can stay up late every night and wake up early the next day… GO INTO MED
SCHOOL!
If you are ready to answer the hows of life… GO INTO MED SCHOOL!
If you are sure that you are not taking up nursing after becoming a licensed physician… GO INTO MED SCHOOL!
What are you waiting for? GO INTO MED SCHOOL!
This country needs more physicians!
This country needs a new blood of doctors!
This country needs you!
To you, future doctor, it's so cool to become a med student! Good luck!
To the incoming freshmen of the UST Faculty of Medicine and Surgery SY 2007-2008... I welcome you!
Welcome to your home – the factory of best doctors!
His term of UST being the "factory" of the best doctors did not go well with me. Perhaps, it might be because of my negative connotation of the word, which is mass production.
Still, I have no choice. *sigh*

Make Health Count!

Every time there is a national election, we hear presidential aspirants talk about their plans for improving economy or share opinions about political issues. Sadly, little has been said by politicians about their vision and program of action for improving the health of the Filipino people.
With failing marks in almost all health indicators and a rapidly widening gap in access to health between the rich and the poor, the Philippines is in dire need of a new leader who will place the health of the Filipino people as a major priority, if not the topmost in the list. We need a president who not just has a deep understanding of the Philippine health situation and the various social determinants that influence it, but more so has a concrete plan in facing the myriad health challenges that we Filipinos face today.
As the health sciences center of the country, the University of the Philippines Manila plays a crucial role in shaping the health system and improving the health status of the Philippines . Moreover, it is imperative that the university exhaust all means to influence the health agenda of our leaders. It is indisputable that UP Manila has the knowledge and expertise to help steer the health of the nation to the right direction – its first century is a shining testament. Now, the fast-approaching 2010 elections is one big opportunity for UP Manila to initiate the national discourse towards progress and equity in health.
This school year, the University Student Council of UP Manila started a university-wide initiative called MAKE IT COUNT 2010. Joined in by various college councils, socio-civic organizations and student political parties in UP Manila, MIC 2010 aims to help the Iskolar ng Bayan realize his vital role in the upcoming 2010 elections. Moreover, this initiative hopes to create avenues for heightened dialogue among students and even politicians regarding different issues concerning the elections and the country at large.
Aside from forums on first time voting, satellite COMELEC registrations, and university-wide mock elections at the end of the school year, the highlight of Make It Count is MAKE HEALTH COUNT, a series of forums featuring presidential aspirants. Led by the USC, the member-organization s of MIC 2010, the Institute of Health Policy and Development Studies of the National Institutes of Health, and the UP Manila Information, Publication, and Public Affairs Office (IPPAO), this series aims to provide a venue for UP Manila students, faculty, and staff to engage in dialogue with presidential candidates on issues concerning Philippine health. Through the MHC series, the UP Manila health sciences community hopes to inform the presidential candidates about key health issues that needs to be promptly addressed as well as learn about the candidates’ opinions and plans of action in solving these problems.
This 2010 elections, UP Manila hopes to elect a president who is healthy, not just physically, but more importantly in terms of his programs and policies in the next six years. Now more than ever, we need a "healthy president" who can ensure the health and well-being of the Filipino nation. We need to MAKE HEALTH COUNT!
Watch out for the succeeding fora in the series this February-March 2010!

Light at the end of the tunnel.
My last week of Batangas immersion will start tomorrow, and then I'll be hauled off back into PGH for two months of intensive hospital experience.
How intensive, I can only imagine.
But seeing the kids' faces when we left for Manila yesterday just broke my heart. Hindi ako magawa ng papers ko. :(
Okay, so I hopped into the bandwagon. I created my own Formspring.me account, and I would love to hear from you guys. :)
I'd get back to you (responses will be posted in my Tumblr) once this whirlwind I'm in is over, 'kay? :) Much love!

Konting tiis na lang, UP graduate na ring matuturingan. :)

My test shot from the studio where we had our graduation pictorial yesterday. Mga July last year pa ata ‘to kinunan, when we started scouting for possible studios where we can hold our grad pictorial.
At mas matino pa ‘to kesa dun sa actual shots ko kahapon. Lol. Buti na lang pwedeng test shots na lang ang ipa-print sa inorder na package instead of yung shots kahapon. So my sablay (the distinct sash that UP grads wear; the one in my picture) and formal shots will be taken from my test shots, tapos yung toga and creative shots will be taken from yesterday’s shoot. :)
Ah, the perks of being in the yearbook editorial board. Hahahaha! XD

She Talks Like A Boss
I am a BS Nursing student at the University of the Philippines Manila working my to become either a
neurosurgeon/neurologist or an oncologist, but never for a working visa
abroad.
Cavite and Manila will always be dearest to my heart.
Reading and writing are my first, and will forever be, my loves. Then came gaming, soundtripping, public speaking, acting, the health and social sciences, photography, blogging, and chemistry.
I'm a sucker for cheap thrills and guilty pleasures -- I'm what my friends describe as "laging game." I also have diverse likes and dislikes, some being quite unusual like my longing to learn Greek.
I absolutely abhor girliness, fashion, make-up, boy-craziness, and the color pink as much as I cursemath. >:( Instead, I dress down, rock with my guitar, love to laugh, am carefree, loud,
and I tend to be one of the boys -- reasons why you should never be fooled by my meek exterior.
I'm also spontaneous, very opinionated, sympathetic, moody, cynical, non-conforming, sentimental, a procrastinator, a cyberjunkie, a night owl, and a hopeless romantic. I have a distorted sense of righteousness, beauty, and all those abstract things as compared to society. I'm a terribly complicated individual, a walking and breathing contradiction, a messy package rolled into one... And loves every minute of it.
